Workshop 1

The participants answered 3 questions. Those questions we would like to ask again at the end of the project and see how the students answer then:

Q 1: Why do you think it is important to document artists and their work?
Answers:
- promote their work
- give more background about the artist
- provide more info that you can't get from just looking
- it's a document of history that can be shared and passed down
- the interview cold give the art center a more special collection
- comparing an American artist's art to an artist from New Zealand show the cultural differences
- to see how they think
Q 2: What can these interviews achieve?
Answers:
- we could show how an artist thinks and progresses through their artwork
- increase the number of visitors to the art center

Workshop 1

Today Helga and I had a successful workshop at HPAC with 8 students. We shared our powerpoint and did some activities with the students. In the powerpoint we discussed the project and why it is important. We also talked about journalism and how to design and conduct an interview. Then we played two examples of artist interviews and asked the students what they thought about them.

Everyone was really excited and enthusiastic about sharing their opinions on the examples. The students liked when the interview had music playing in the background and when the camera was closer to the artist. Lastly, we practiced interviewing each other with the questions the students came up with last week.

Helga took some pictures of the students which will be posted. For next week we will learn how to set up and work with video and recording equipment, and the students will practice interviewing a teaching artist from HPAC. Also we talked about getting the students involved with the blog.

Workshop 1 Outline

This is what Helga and I have outlined for the YAB meeting October 21

I. Discuss the project

IV. Try to show an example of an interview

V. Go over the group's interview questions, add more to them, etc.

VI. Practice interviewing each other in groups of 2, using the questions already created and new ones

Miles, Abigail, and Helga met Ray at the HPAC for a first project introduction and site investigation this afternoon. We are impressed about the space and we are looking forward to work on an exciting project. We had a good time and we missed Becca.

I can meet Monday and/or Wednesday. I prefer meeting with Ray and then join the youth group coming Wednesday during their official meeting. May be we narrow it down to Wednesday and make individual investigations of the space before the official meetings. Please fix a time and meeting point. I will be there. Helga

Becca's First Visit

I went to HPAC this morning just to check out the site because I'm not sure if I'll make it to our meeting on Monday. I actually ran into Ray immediately and he said we should set up a time to meet with him, so maybe on Monday as well. I think the meeting will be good so we can figure out where to start and which artists we are supposed to interview for the archive.

Also, in Ray's email he mentioned that the Youth Art Board meets on Wednesdays from 3:30-5, so maybe we should attend that this week too (I can drive all of us to that and then to class!).

I was looking at the website at the 4833:rph and A:List links, and I think our project will be connected to these since they are what Ray works with and they are related to the artists that have exhibited and taught at HPAC.

The actual building is pretty big with galleries on the first and second floors. And there are classrooms and meeting spaces and a cafe! So let me know what you all think and when we should set up a meeting with Ray, I think the sooner the better.
